In response to Al Gore’s call for rapidly moving the country off carbon-emitting energy sources, those innovators in the Googleplex have released their own national energy plan that takes the nation off petroleum and coal by 2030 while cutting greenhouse releases in half.

The company cites the U.S. Department of Energy on wind jobs, a burst of 292 gigwatts representing 476,000 jobs. It’s a benefit Texas will be reaping the benefits of in the near future, as our already strong wind presence increases with a recently approved $4 billion transmission-line expansion for renewable development in West Texas.

Kicking solar up to 28 gigawatts by 2016 — another aspect of Google’s 2030 plan — would lead to an additional 440,000 jobs, a private contractor found.

But there’s potentially a major crimp in the hose of plenty. And it looms in the higher energy prices waiting to meet us as we cross the energy divide.

After a new president is sworn in on January 20, one of the first issues they will certainly tackle is the national energy policy. Both candidates are supporting cap-and-trade legislation for reducing carbon emissions by American industry. However, neither showed for the pivotal Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act vote this summer.

Despite problems in the bill — hundreds of millions to the coal industry and indirect benefits to nuclear power — it represented the most significant stab at necessary carbon reduction to date.

There are serious differences between an Obama or McCain presidency on cap-and-trade’s fine print. The Obama camp’s energy policy would require carbon credits to be auctioned off from the get go (pdf). A portion of those earnings to be used to help pay for biofuel and clean-energy development research.

McCain wants to give away, or greatly discount, that first round of pollution credits, allowing the “lowest-cost” compliance options, according to his website.

Neither has the poor firmly in mind when it comes to this massively important shift in energy policy.

One thing their handlers should be doing is digging deep into the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities’ take on this last climate bill — specifically cap-and-trade’s needed low-income assistance.

Virtually any path forward from here, with tightening global demand on petroleum and the double-edged nature of our oil addition becoming ever clearer, will see energy rates rise for Americans. Even the DOE says increased domestic drilling will not drop our pump prices until 2030 — and then it will be minimal, if at all.

So, how will we help the poorest among us cross this sure-to-be-turbulent energy divide? One way is to factor it into cap-and-trade, says the CBPP.

Our analysis, using an approach developed by the Congressional Budget Office, finds that even a modest 15 percent reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions would cost the poorest fifth of Americans an average of $750 a year per household.  These households have average annual incomes of only about $13,000.

The $750 figure is the cost before any action is taken to mitigate these effects and is a measure of what would happen if low-income households were left on their own to cope with the effects of higher energy prices.  (It is not an estimate of the impact of any particular legislation.)

Some opponents of cap and trade legislation have claimed that such legislation is inherently harmful to low-income consumers. That claim is false.  But to avoid that outcome, a significant share of the allowance value must be set aside for low-income consumers and delivered through effective mechanisms.

The group estimates that 14 percent of cap-and-trade’s earnings will offset the spike in energy rates. A good amount more will be needed if we are going to assist those whose incomes are in the more middling range.

To be fair, Obama has other assistance in place that factors in: job retraining and manufacturing sector retools, green jobs for returning vets. But nothing directly computed for weathering certain energy cost increases.

The McCain plan is lighter on specifics. Though I can’t help but think “Drill, Baby, Drill” has something in the way of job creation behind it, I worry like a feral momma cat how the attack on domestic petrol jives with his planned carbon reductions.

Climate refugees don’t tend to be those clinking their crystal on the rising seas. Something for Bob Schieffer at this final presidential debate? I would hope so.

Όταν ο (συγγραφέας) Clive Barker αναλαμβάνει να σκηνοθετήσει τη δικιά του νουβέλα, το αποτέλεσμα είναι ένα αριστούργημα! Η ατμόσφαιρα σκοτεινή και μυστηριώδης, το αίμα ρέει και η εμφάνιση των δαιμόνων -και του γνωστού και μη εξαιρεταίου pinhead που κοσμεί τα εξώφυλλα- απογειώνει το αποτέλεσμα. Η ταινία-σημείο αναφοράς δημιούργησε και πολλές αξιοπρεπείς κατά κανόνα αλλά σίγουρα κατώτερες συνέχειες. Όσοι fun των ταινιών τρόμου δεν το έχετε δει απλά σπεύσατε!

That's if you believe what the Democrats have been telling you.  I realize that most people don't want to read long diatribes by firebreathing liberals so I'll do this in bulleted points.

• Every third party that ran in Florida in 2000 earned enough votes to "steal" the election from Gore.
• Gore was technically running as an incumbent and lost both his home state AND Bill Clinton's home state despite the booming economy.
• Roughly 50,000 Florida Democrats voted for Bush through no fault of Ralph Nader.
• In this election, Ralph is "taking" votes from McCain, not Obama and has been shown statistically to widen Obama's lead over McCain.
• To assume that presidential elections are only about winning is to ignore the vast leverage that voters have over policy and candidates.  A significant percentage of votes for Nader (regardless where or who they come from) signals to the Democratic party that there is an audience to the left that they are ignoring.
• Consider that if Nader pulls 5% this election he will represent a population greater than Jewish Americans and a little under half the size of the black community in America. Those two constituencies are vastly important to the Democratic party. There is absolutely no doubt that the Democratic party will do what it can to regain those votes.
• The only way for the Democratic party to earn those votes is to take up some of the issues they have been blatantly ignoring.
• Democrat supporters have stated that a leftward shift of the party could cause a vacuum in the center which Republicans may effectively fill.  Many of Nader's key issues, though, are representative of upwards of 50% of the electorate.  Regardless of being on the left or the right, most (lowercase) democrats and republicans believe in less corporate welfare, more regulation, universal health care, truly alternative forms of energy (not ethanol), better education and more government accountability.
• There is no accountability in voting for the lesser of two evils. Candidates are only accountable if they know they have to earn your vote.  That's basic politics.  A voters' leverage only lies in her/his ability to stand firmly for what s/he believes in. Democrats certainly know that you won't vote for McCain, so why do they have to listen to you? They can do whatever they'd like so long as they appeal to you marginally more than does McCain.
• What did voting for the lesser of two evils in Congress do for you?  The PATRIOT Act, the Iraq War, warrantless wiretapping, taking impeachment off the table for some of the greatest war criminals in American history.  "Who is more foolish?  The fool or the fool who follows him?"  Is it really implied that the Democrats are truly the lesser of two evils when they have been the sole enablers of the Republican party?

PROXIMA QUINTA dia 16 de outubro às 22 horas, a Sinfonia de Cães apresenta a décima primeira parte da Temporada de Horror no CICAS, na zona norte de São Paulo.

O filme dessa quinta é o clássico EVIL DEAD, a Morte do Demônio de Sam Raimi de 1981.
Após a exibição do filme rola um debate sobre as sequências do Evil Dead e a carreira do diretor que começou nessa terrível obra sobre amigos sofrendo com perturbações e possessões demoníacas e chegou até a consagração pop com o Homem Aranha ($$$). Além disso vamos falar també da ascensão do ator Bruce Campbell. Outro tópico desse bate papo, será o "necromicon" (o livro dos Mortos) , mas só pra quem aparecer (vivo) nesta próxima quinta feira no CICAS às 22hs.

Os filmes são exibidos em telão com projeção de 3m x 2m, pipoca e suco na faixa.

Hellraiser: Har faktiskt aldrig sett första hellraiser innan, har bara sett en av dem och det är 3:an.

Var ett tag sen jag såg den men gillade den inte alls lika bra som ettan, men gillade "Cenobite"-erna (demonerna)  , tycker dom är redigt bra gjorda både i ettan och 3an.

Aja nu är det ettan jag sett precis, och jag gillade den en massa mycket :P
Det var redigt mycket gore, och riktigt bra gjort med tanke på att den är gjord 1987.
Filmen gav mig en större skräck känsla än de flesta av dagens skräckfilmer gör.

Det som gör denna film så speciell, är deras sätt de filmar på, och karaktärerna. Sättet de filmade på framhävde en mer kuslig och skräckinjagande känsla som nästan fick en att rysa. Och karaktärerna är mycket bra skrivna, spec. Cenobiterna.

En grymt bra skräckis av Clive Barker, se den "Blink" ^-^

... de un clásico ochentero. Esta película de 1983 se tituló en España Siete Mujeres atrapadas. Cuenta la trágica historia de una residencia femenina donde por una broma una chica muere y sus compañeras deciden ocultar el cadáver... Todas estas desvergonzadas mujeres no tardarán en ir cayendo una a una víctimas de un misterioso asesino.

Esta nueva versión (en la que solamente habrá cinco mujeres) la está dirigiendo Stewart Hendler, un novato que promete muchas emociones fuertes, buenas dosis de gore y alguna que otra teta.

Ya he podido visionar una de las últimas películas de zombies de esta temporada, Dance of the dead, también estrenada en el último festival de Sitges, con bastante expectación.

Un filme que claramente no aspira a nada, pero que se convierte sin quererlo en una película friki de culto. Con un guión muy parecido a otros del mismo género de zombies, una base química junto a un cementerio da el pistoletazo de salida a un grupo de adolescentes de lo más variopinto, formado sobretodo por los más frkis del instituto y los más perdedores, que al final se acabn convirtiendo en los heroes exterminando a la plaga de zombies.

Con un humor muy ácido y negro. me lo pasé como un niño viéndola, incluso me he reido bastante en algunas escenas, no tienen desperdicio los momentos de lucha contra los muertos, en los que la sangre las visceras y el gore no faltan.

Sin duda un título a tener en cuenta, junto a otros como Zombies party, o la más antigua Braindead de Peter Jackson.

Solo les puedo decir que es una lista llena de spoilers y que nos podria revelar algunos detalles del rumbo que tendra esta nueva pelicula, 2 personajes de la primer Saw que teniamos olvidados y que seguramente saldran en Flashbacks. Podremos ver un poco de la relacion entre Jigsaw y Obi que ya nos habian prometido en la anterior pelicula, y lo mas importante: varias teorias e historias inconclusas de Saw 3 podran ser resueltas.

It’s bad enough that American taxpayers have to bail out the privately owned, tax-exempt Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But it’s truly outrageous that tax dollars will also go to support activist groups involved in voter fraud and illegal immigration.

Their careful evaluation of the housing bill wasn't finished. They had more to say:

According to House Financial Services Committee member Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., the small print in the $42 billion bailout bill passed by Congress and signed by President Bush requires these two government-sponsored mortgage giants to deposit 4.2 percent of all new mortgages they underwrite into the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that will be $531 million in fiscal 2009 alone.

Here’s the catch. Bachmann warns that the trust fund — the largest expansion of federal housing assistance since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society — is required to make grants to organizations that have “demonstrated the experience and the capacity to carry out the proposed Trust Fund activity.” Which means that money can easily be siphoned off to groups such as the National Council of La Raza and the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. The latter has been heavily funded by George Soros, the mega-wealthy mogul behind many liberal causes.

La Raza, which opposes efforts to stop illegal immigration, and ACORN, members of which have been convicted of voter registration fraud in numerous states, are each eligible for $230 million under Section 134: Grants for Housing Counseling Assistance. And because the trust fund is “off budget,” the grants won’t show up on any congressional balance sheets. The Fannie Mae Foundation has already contributed more than $800,000 to the ACORN Housing Corp., which was also actively involved in the sub-prime mortgage disaster. La Raza testified before the Financial Services Committee in favor of the housing trust fund on numerous occasions. Little wonder. It’s a perfect way to hide payoffs to activist groups that in turn support political candidates who promise to keep their funding spigot on full blast.

The best part of this article was in the summary paragraph:

These morsels are just a taste of what’s to come if Barack Obama wins the White House and Democrats gain veto-proof majorities in the Senate and House. As an opening bid in his $6 billion anti-poverty program, Obama seeks a Social Investment Fund Network with a White House office to disburse funds to “social entrepreneurs and leading non-profits” that are inspiring “change in their communities.” Translated: Obama will give billions more tax dollars to radical non-profits like Soros’ ACORN and LaRaza. Soros – who is also a long-time Obama donor - must want a return on his investment.

This story hit the printed media in August. It is now October and the rest of the media is now coming onboard. They are coming onboard not because of the original housing bill but because of the massive bailout and stock market major fluctuations. The mark has been missed by most....now it is time to let everyone know why the markets keep erupting.

In my opinion markets are erupting because it is what George Soros wants. He is poised to put "his candidate" in the highest office of this country, The White House. It must be the last thing the American people do. Please stop Obama and Soros, or the USA will be destroyed. Your way of life will disappear. FISA will allow regular people to be "watched" for dissenting behavior. Wealth will be redistributed but not the way "low income" people think it will.

Be afraid folks, Soros has been trying this since 2000....first Gore, then Dean and now Obama....Think on November 4th, your future is at stake.

Ο συγγραφέας H.P.Lovecraft αναζητεί το σατανικό βιβλίο Necronomicon και τρεις διαφορετικές ιστορίες ξετυλίγονται μέσα απ' αυτό...

Τρεις αυτόνομες σύντομες ταινίες, βασισμένες χαλαρά σε αντίστοιχα διηγήματα του Lovecraft ξετυλίγονται ενώ στην ταινία πρωταγωνιστεί ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας. Στην πρώτη ένας άντρας προσπαθεί να αναστήσει τη νεκρή γυναίκα του χρησιμοποιώντας το βιβλίο. Στη δεύτερη ένας δημοσιογράφος πηγαίνει στο σπίτι μιας γυναίκας για να ερευνήσει μια σειρά φόνους για να ανακαλύψει ένα τρομερό μυστικό. Στην τρίτη δύο αστυνομικοί αναζητούν έναν serial killer και καταλήγουν πρωταγωνιστές μιας φοβερής παράνοιας. To Necronomicon δεν είναι απ' τις ταινίες που ενθουσίασαν πολύ κόσμο. Προσωπικά μπορώ να πω ότι μου άρεσε πολύ, όχι λόγω της αγάπης προς τον συγγραφέα H.P.Lovecraft (οι ιστορίες είναι χαλαρά βασισμένες σ' αυτόν όπως προείπα) αλλά διότι πιστεύω καταφέρνει να αναπαράξει την σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα και τον κοσμικό τρόμο που αρμόζει σε ένα τέτοιο σενάριο. Στην τρίτη ιστορία η παράνοια και το gore απογειώνεται και καλό είναι να το έχετε υπόψιν πριν ξεκινήσετε να βλέπετε την ταινία...

Pues nada, directos a lo que interesa:

Reflejos, o la americanización de Aja

Nada más ver el trailer se me quitaron las ganas de verla. Tras trabajos cómo Alta tensión y la brutal revisión del clásico Las colinas tienen ojos, uno se hacía la idea de que Alexandre Aja no bajaría el listón intentado adaptarse a los canónes de Hollywood...sin embargo, no ha sido así, y Reflejos es una flojilla (que no mala) película de terror sobrenatural, entretenida pero sin demasiadas pretensiones, y bastante previsible (en mi opinión, lo peor son los personajes de copia y pega)...a todo ello cabe sumarle que se trata de otro remake de una película coreana.

La cuestión es... ¿será el principio del fin de Aja? Esperemos que no, pero ya se ha embarcado en otro innecesario remake, en este caso de la casposilla Pirañas. Crucemos los dedos para que este joven realizador vuelva a apostar por la innovación, y no por los refritos.

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, marchando una de Ghibli sin villano

Una de las sorpresas del festival fue el estreno de lo nuevo de Ghibli: Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, una entretenida y elaborada película de animación que nos muestra la relación de amor/amistad entre un niño de 5 años y un pez de colores con poderes mágicos - puesto que tiene unos padres un tanto peculiares-.

Se trata de un efectivo film ambientado mayoritariamente en un paisaje marítimo, con las acostumbradas dosis de fantasia del estudio. Sin embargo, en mi opinión "falla" el hecho de que la trama es bastante simplona y realmente se echa en falta algún villano o algo que complique un poco más las cosas a los protagonistas... a pesar de ello, admito también que soy un poco finolis, y que Ponyo realmente es un buen film, sencillo pero en resumidas cuentas bueno y con sus momentos divertidos.

Let the right one in, romance vampírico

Otra de las películas con no demasiado renombre pero con muy buena factura es Let the right one in, un film de vampiros que narra la relación entre Oskar, un chico con padres divorciados y problemas en el colegio -le acosan unos matones de su clase- y Eli, una chica solitaria y bastante peculiar (creo que es el motivo es bastante obvio xD).

Lo que podía haber sido una pastelorra historia romántica con toques vampíricos es, sin embargo, una película con buen guión, actores y ambientación -además, es de agradecer alguno de los toques de humor y gore de la película-.

Lástima que la película quede posiblemente condenada al anonimato, porque la verdad es que merece la pena verla.

Synecdoche, New York; en los límites de la irrealidad

Sin lugar a dudas, la más rara que he visto este año en el festival. En ella, se nos muestra la historia de un guionista al cual la vida no le está sonriendo en absoluto: su mujer se va a vivir sola, llevando consigo a su hija, y la posible salvación de éste, el romance que mantiene con la taquillera del teatro para el que trabaja, se va a pique. Por ello, decide dar un giro radical a su vida: convertir todo lo que le rodea en una obra de teatro de extensiones demenciales.

I just wanted to show you my latest painting "Golden terribilis".  Wikipedia says - Phyllobates terribilis, the Golden Poison Frog or the Golden Dart Frog, is a poison dart frog endemic to the Pacific coast of Colombia. In captivity, poison dart frogs are not poisonous. It is in the wild where they are in fact poisonous because of what they eat. Thisamphibian of the dendrobatidae family is currently considered the most poisonous vertebrateworldwide.^[1] The optimal habitat of P. terribilis is the rainforest with high rain rates This Frog's conservation status is on the Endangered List.
