As you dear readers may know, I, lilylethal, am a music junkie. And so, being said music junkie, I love a great many bands, one of them being Motley Crue. The bassist, Nikki Sixx, is one of my heroes, and he wrote this amazing book titled The Heroin Diaries: A Year In the Life of A Shattered Rockstar. Its about his descent into massive drug and alcohol addictions, and its the story of his death, and his depression, and all the bad things that happened to him while he did what he loved (playing music, although, he did love heroin too...)

So I'm reading this book again for the second time, and every time I read it, there are times when I'll just stop and pause and think about how a certain passage relates to my life, or I'll just think about my own problems. And I could never really figure out why this book made me dwell so much on my own shit, but it's because I realized that people are drawn to other people with similar issues. Like interests, but instead, its your problems, and your fucked up emotions that bring you together.

Take Red and I, for example. The reason we're such good friends, and have such a strong bond is because we've shared some of the darkest, most intimate tales with each other. Its almost like slicing each others knuckles, and then pounding your fists together. We're like sisters now, because of everything we've been through together. Blood is thicker than water, after all...and god knows we've bled enough.

But really, this book is the probably the most honest, disturbing, inspiring, and hopeful book I've ever read. I would most definitely recommend it.

There's another thing about this book too. I feel a very strong connection to Nikki Sixx, because of this book, despite the fact that we have no idea who the other person is. But I think its because honestly, I see myself in him, in the possible future. I know how weak-willed I am. I've come face to face with that realization lately, and it's scary. I know how easily I give in, and I know how out of control I really am. Already in my life, I've gotten wasted, done weed, smoked cigarettes, and taken painkillers in excess. And its not good. I see myself becoming this man's nightmare.

We always tell ourselves when we're young that we're never going to be something, right? Like, say your dad is an alcoholic who beats your mom. And you tell yourself, "I will never be an alcoholic because of what its done to my family" and some people stick to it. For some people, the thought of drinking that bad, and losing that much control, it makes them sick. But then there are the others who have the Alcoholism printed directly into their pre-disposed DNA. They start to drink to "ease the pain", and what do you know, in the future, they become their father, beating their own wives, like they said they'd never do.

All I'm saying is, don't promise yourself things you know you won't keep. Even if you're fierce about it, even if you're stern, the demons will always come back to challenge you once again. And you can decide whether or not to honor the promise you made.

After all, I used to tell myself I would never smoke, drink, and do drugs. I even tell myself now, "Oh, I'll never do cocaine, I'll never do heroin..." But there's always that chance that you'll become a liar, not only to everyone around you, but to yourself.

We as humans are much too unreliable when it comes to speaking truths.

That's what I'm afraid of.

Vince Neil - Vocals
Mick Mars - Guitar
Nikki Sixx - Bass
Tommy Lee - Drums, Piano

Produced by: Motley Crue

This isn't one concert, it's a cut & paste job of performances taken from the 80s and late 90s. Having actually seen Motley played live TWICE now, I can say this album does them no justice at all. I used to enjoy it when it was first released, but it just can't compare to their live show.

There's no doubt that all live albums get a little "touch up" in the studio, but I think Vince's voice in concert today sounds better than some of his parts on here. Good song selection though, there's a strong presence of early material and "Ten Seconds to Love" is a great live cut.

Highlights: "Looks That Kill", "Ten Seconds to Love", "Shout at the Devil", "Smokin' in the Boys' Room", "Without You", "Home Sweet Home"

Motley Crue - Greatest Hits (1998, Motley Records/Beyond Music)

Track Listing:
1. "Bitter Pill" ... 4:26
2. "Enslaved" ... 4:32
3. "Girls, Girls, Girls" ... 4:30
4. "Kickstart My Heart" ... 4:43
5. "Wild Side" ... 4:40
6. "Glitter" [Remix] ... 4:30
7. "Dr. Feelgood" ... 4:50
8. "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)" ... 4:12
9. "Home Sweet Home" ... 3:55
10. "Afraid" ... 4:08
16. "Looks That Kill" ... 4:07
17. "Shout at the Devil" ... 3:42

This is Motley's 2nd compilation, coming 7 years after Decade of Decadence. And do you want to know what got me to buy this album? The World Wrestling Federation! That's right! Motley did a live performance on WWF TV (on either Monday Night Raw or Sunday Night Heat) and WWF was pushing this album hard for them. WWF also debuted supposed Motley Crue "bodyguard" Test at the same time and tied it into this.

I seem to remember this era for Motley being hyped as a return to form for them (despite the fact that they were only promoting their past). We had the original members, but Generation Swine bombed with it's experimental modern sound, so they put out a greatest hits and recorded two new songs to prove to the world they could still rock 'n' roll!

The two news songs, "Enslaved" and "Bitter Pill", are pretty good, IMO, and wouldn't sound out of place on Dr. Feelgood. They won't go down as all-time Motley classics, but I still liked'em alot back in the day and I still do. The remix of "Glitter" is my preferred take over the original version from Generation Swine. All in all, a solid greatest hits (though it ignores the 1994 album), but I'm a stickler for greatest hits compilations going in chronological order and this one is all over the place. I always thought the cover was pretty cool though.

If you want a grew overview of Motley though, go with Red, White & Crue. I plan on upgrading to that one at some point because it covers more songs, features the two new songs found here, AND includes 3 other new songs.

Highlights: Um... It's a greatest hits compilation.

Motley Crue - New Tattoo (2000, Motley Records/Beyond Music)

Track Listing:
1. "Hell on High Heels" ... 4:15
2. "Treat Me Like the Dog I Am" ... 3:40
3. "New Tattoo" ... 4:18
4. "Dragstrip Superstar" ... 4:22
9. "Fake" ... 3:44

Produced by: Mike Clink

Wow, has it been 8 years already since this was released? I still remember going to Wal-Mart the very day it was released and picking it up. As excited I was that Motley was making new music, this album just didn't do anything for me.

"Hell on High Heels" was released online quite sometime before the album's release and I remember thinking, "that's it?" To this day, I find the whole album lackluster. It's not bad, but there's nothing memorable here that you'll away from singing or humming. For the most part, New Tattoo is very average hard rock and just doesn't sound like Motley at all, IMO. The only song that comes close to "classic Motley" is "Punched in the Teeth by Love".

At least they were on the right track though and would finally score a home run with their next studio album, Saints of Los Angeles, 8 years later. But this? This is Motley's worst album, I think (yes, even behind Generation Swine that at least had a few really good songs). Kinda surprising that such a bland album was turned in with Mike Clink producing. You'd think putting GNR's longtime producer with Motley Crue would deliver an instant classic!

This is, of course, the Tommy-less album (because he was too busy trying to be a rap-rock star) so the late Randy Castillo filled in.

Highlights: "Punched in the Teeth by Love", "Hollywood Ending"

Track Listing:
1. "City Boy Blues" ... 4:05
2. "Smokin' in the Boys' Room" ... 3:22
13. "City Boy Blues" [Demo] ... 4:28
Mick Mars - Guitar
Nikki Sixx - Bass
Tommy Lee - Drums, Piano

Produced by: Tom Werman

I had forgotten how good this album was. It's not as raw and heavy as Too Fast For Love (in fact it's downright glammy at times) or filled with nonstop classics like Shout at the Devil, but this is still some of Motley's best work. Again, I have the 1999 reissue and I believe in the liner notes for that version Nikki states that it's not their best work because the band was too wrapped up in their own lives and drugs.

Oh well, I like it anyway.

The instrumental and demo versions of "Home Sweet Home" are pretty cool listens.

Highlights: "Smokin' in the Boys' Room", "Louder Than Hell", "Keep Your Eye on the Money", "Home Sweet Home", "Tonight (We Need A Lover)", "Use It or Lose It", "Save Our Souls"

Motley Crue - Generation Swine (1997, Elektra Records; 1999, Motley Records/Beyond Music)

Track Listing:
1. "Find Myself" ... 2:51
2. "Afraid" ... 4:07
3. "Flush" ... 5:02
4. "Generation Swine" ... 4:39
5. "Confessions" ... 4:20
6. "Beauty" ... 3:47
7. "Glitter" ... 5:00
8. "Anybody Out There" ... 1:50
9. "Let Us Prey" ... 4:22
10. "Rocketship" ... 2:04
11. "A Rat Like Me" ... 4:13
12. "Shout at the Devil '97" ... 3:42
13. "Brandon" ... 3:25
BONUS TRACKS:
14. "Afraid" [Swine Mix/Jimbo Mix] ... 3:57
15. "Wreck Me" [Previously Unreleased] ... 4:19
16. "Kiss the Sky" [Previously Unreleased] ... 4:46
17. "Rocketship" [Early Demo] ... 1:35

Band:
Vince Neil - Vocals
Mick Mars - Guitar
Nikki Sixx - Bass, Vocals ("Rocketship"), Co-Vocals ("Find Myself" and "Beauty")
Tommy Lee - Drums, Piano

Produced by: Scott Humphrey

So Corabi is out, Vince is in again. And once again, Motley delivers something different. Different can be good (like Corabi's one-time outing with the band), but in this case, not so much. It's just a weird mix of alternative metal, industrial metal and trippy pop that isn't suited for Vince's voice. But I guess in the alternative rock-infested 1997, Dr. Feelgood II would've failed as well, so it was pretty much lose-lose for Crue at this point.

Sometimes, the songs work though. "Beauty" and "Glitter" (though I prefer the remix version found on Greatest Hits) are weird, beautiful songs and "Find Myself" is, lyrically, pretty close to the roots of Crue. "Shout at the Devil '97" is kind of a pointless re-recording, but there's nothing wrong with it, so I give it a pass. "Brandon" is hands down the worst Motley Crue song ever. Sorry, Tommy, I know you meant well.

I picked this '99 reissue up pretty cheap, brand new for around $6.99 at FYE, and this was shortly after the reissues were released! So that tells you how badly the album sold. Definitely not an album I ever have the urge to listen to.

Highlights: "Find Myself", "Afraid", "Beauty", "Glitter", "A Rat Like Me", "Shout at the Devil '97"

Misunderstood. It's the name of a song on this album and that very same word could be used to sum up the album as a whole. When I first bought this, when it was reissued, I didn't like it at all. The only track that stood out to me was "Hooligan's Holiday", and the rest just seemed like a totally calculated "let's join the grunge/alternative bandwagon" move. I wasn't in the mindset to listen to a more experimental Motley. I wanted sleaze and decadence.

Looking back, I like this album alot. John Corabi is a great vocalist and his voice fits the more serious and dark sound of the album. I definitely couldn't see him fitting typical Motley sound and I'm glad they didn't even try. If you took the band's name away from this album, I think it would've sold better and been better reviewed. This would've been a nice side project for Nikki, Mick and Tommy while they tried to patch things up with Vince, but since they went ahead and said this was the new Crue, it backfired on them big time. So they had to go back and get Vince in the band again anyway!

There's no big sing along choruses here, but what they produced is good alternative hard rock and even if this wasn't the best idea from a marketing standpoint, I gotta respect Motley for going in a totally different direction with a totally different singer when they could've just called it quits or found a Vince clone.

Highlights: "Power to the Music", "Uncle Jack", "Hooligan's Holiday", "Misunderstood", "Til Death Do Us Part", "Welcome to the Numb", "Smoke the Sky", "Driftaway"

Maybe it is because I just finished the Heroin Diaries, or maybe I’m just feeling extra sensit

Maybe it is because I just finished the Heroin Diaries, or maybe I'm just feeling extra sensitive to this kind of thing today. Last night I went to a local bar to see a band play, and the lead singer had obviously had too much to smoke before the show and was high out of his mind. And if that wasn't enough, he was taking tequila shots onstage. Had it been any other time I probably would have just laughed and ignored it like my friends did, but last night I just couldn't help but think of what a waste it was. Now, this is a pretty good band, and they were even good while playing drunk and high, and their intoxicated antics were pretty funny to watch...just ridiculous, really...they didn't make me want to see them again, though.

Now, I'm not going to be the AA police, everyone today knows the harm that drugs and alcohol can do to one's health, so there isn't any point in rehashing all that. No, what you put in your body is your own choice, and if for some reason you want to risk it, go right ahead. That is your choice to make.

No, the reason I think people shouldn't do drugs is because they make you look like a damn fool. I can't understand why a person would want to stand up on a stage in front of all their friends, family, and fans, and perfect strangers, staring blankly out into space, stumbling around, and ranting into the microphone about how drunk they are. All those people who admire you, and you're gonna turn up and make an idiot out of yourself. How do people think that is a good idea, or even fun at all? I would think it'd be embarrassing, more than anything.

And then of course there is a more "severe" case like Nikki Sixx's...which is just heartbreaking. I think after reading that book, I have more firmly grasped exactly how dangerous and devastating drugs can be. Anytime you put strange chemicals like that into your body, you lose a little bit of control over your life. Whatever potential you might have if you were clean, you lose half of when you're on drugs. They surely don't help. I'm sure Nikki would be the first one to admit that he not only played the part of a fool while on drugs...he hurt his family, embarrassed his friends and coworkers, and he very nearly paid the ultimate price for his addiction. And it all began with that first smoke.

yea, ask Nikki Sixx if he still thinks the drugs were worth it.

Its not that I didn't already know all the facts and the consequences. Its not that this has been some sort of revelation to me. I guess all that has really happened is that I have become so much more convinced that drugs of any sort are never something I ever want in my life. I have a pack of cigarettes on my dresser right now, but I'm not going to smoke one. it is starting to gross me out just to think of inhaling that stuff, and it's just tobacco, which I'm around every day (I live in North Carolina, for goodness sake...tobacco-growing capital of the world) Not even something all that serious. I just don't want to be under the control of anything. I want to be able to think clearly and rationally, and not have to deal with an addiction. I don't want to give myself away like that.

Maybe my life is taking a turn for the better? I don't know. Anyway, I'm glad for once I feel like this, now. maybe one day, everyone will agree.

ROCK ON

Tommy Lee - Drums

Oh how, I love remasters. Especially when they add demoes, b-sides and live cuts to'em. In that regard, KISS has failed me when they released their remasters. >=[ Anyway, I had heard the original '89 album a few years before picking up the 1999 "Crucial Crue" edition. One of my best friends owned the original and I borrowed it for what must've been close to a year. I honestly hoped he had forgotten about it, but he asked for it back one day, so being the good friend I was, I obliged. It all worked out though 'cause now I have the reissue with the bonus tracks.

Of course I was aware of songs like "Dr. Feelgood", "Kickstart My Heart" and "Without You" before ever listening to the album, but when I finally had heard the whole album for the first time, I was disappointed. I had started at the very beginning with Too Fast for Love with the '99 reissues, and this album fell flat for me compared to what I had heard earlier.

This was Motley's biggest album in terms of sales, but I just don't get it. And people say Girls, Girls, Girls was too poppy and slick? Nephew, please, this is total pop metal. I'm not saying it's not good, but it's hardly one of Motley's best, IMO. Motley's signature sleaze seems to be missing here for the most part outside of "Dr. Feelgood", "Kickstart My Heart", and "She Goes Down". Even "Slice of Your Pie", which is right up my alley in terms of song titles and lyrics, just doesn't work for me. And what's up with the extensive use of female back-up singers (at least where the bonus tracks are concerned)? Gee, that Bob Rock sure does know how to neuter great rock bands, huh?

A few rock 'n' roll all-stars lended their voices as back-up singers on the album: Steven Tyler ("Sticky Sweet"), Jack Blades ("Sticky Sweet" & "Same Ol' Situation"), Bryan Adams ("Sticky Sweet"), Cheap Trick's Robin Zander & Rick Nielson ("She Goes Down") and Skid Row ("Time for Change").

I'm at the part of the heroin diaries where Denise Matthews (aka Vanity) is saying that she and Nikki couldn't have made their relationship right without Jesus, "so it wasn't meant to be...or else it surely would have been."

what does that mean? Is she saying that had Nikki become a Christian their relationship would have worked out?

hahaha can you just imagine...Nikki Sixx marrying an evangelist. The world would certainly be different.

Denise's comments in the book are so wierd. I mean, I'm glad she is passionate and excited about her faith and all, no problem there...I kind of wish I was that passionate about something...but somehow she is able to twist every little thing into a chance to talk about getting saved, and thats not normal. Most of the time they don't make any sense, and I have no idea what is going on.

Anyway, thats all I have to say for now.

Rock On!!!

its 1:15 Am, and I'm sitting here staring at the computer screen, wondering what to do with myself. Imagine that--I actually crawled out of my bed to come sit here in this corner of my bedroom and rant to an unseen audience about absolutely nothing. What is wrong with me?

I'll be honest, I'm not tired at all. Its one of those weird occasions where I feel like I have a lot to say and I want to say it, but exactly what it is I want to say is...not coming to me. My mind is drawing a blank.

I suspect I should mention that I'm currently reading Nikki Sixx's the Heroin Diaries, and its messing with my head. Why have I waited until now to read it? ah, a good question. Well, for one thing, when it first came out late last year, I was down to my last penny and honestly couldn't afford to waste any money on a book. So I determined to get it from the Library. Well, as may be expected from the state of North Carolina, not one county anywhere near mine had bought a copy of the damn book, so I couldn't check it out afterall. The school library had one, but it had a waitlist that ensured that the book would be checked out until March of 2008. What could I do but hold out until then? March finally came around, but i was overwhelmed with schoolwork and the thought of adding another book to my "to-do" list just seemed ridiculous...so once again, I decided to wait. This time, I promised myself I would get ahold of the book as soon as school was out, whatever the cost.

Flash forward to yesterday--I finally get my copy of The Heroin Diaries in the mail (I'm still trying to save money, so I found a good deal at Amazon.com), and since then I've been reading bits and pieces of it whenever I get a spare minute. I'm up to April now.

I can't get it out of my head. I think most of all, this book has driven home to me Nikki's humanity, and made him seem so much more real to me. Its easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamor surrounding rockstars, and forget they're people too. They seem so invincible...almost like characters at Disney world or something...they never really die, they never go away. And if something should happen to one of the guys in the costume, it doesn't matter because there will always be someone else there to step into the suit and carry on with the show. No one ever knows the difference, because no one ever sees the man inside the suit. So anyway, to me, reading this memoir was kind of like a giant mouse taking off his head, and revealing the little human inside.

Can you imagine having kids praising your every move, but having to deal with the reality that they're not really worshiping you---just the persona you've taken on. I think that is everyone's biggest fear...the fear of being lost to the world, the fear of loneliness, the fear of not really mattering. Everyone wants to be significant, and everyone wants to be loved and accepted and admired for who they are inside, and I think everyone wants to be known intimately by someone else. We thrive off the appreciation of others, really, we do.

I cannot imagine being so angry at the world as Nikki was.

I've never felt that kind of loneliness.

My heart really hasn't been broken yet, I haven't had to face any severe letdowns from those I look up to.

My life has been so blessed, and I think this book makes me appreciate it so much more. I can't judge Sixx--what determined the life I was going to live? What kept me from turning out just like him? I don't know, except that none of it was my doing. Knowing myself, I would have damned myself just as he did. I suppose God has protected me in ways I don't know.

This is turning into a mindless ramble, I'm going to stop writing now. If it is too incoherent, I'll delete this post in the morning. But for now, Its here to read...

Bless you, Rock on.

Before Sixx A.M. ever saw the light of day, Nikki Sixx had another side project called 58. The name

Before Sixx A.M. ever saw the light of day, Nikki Sixx had another side project called 58. The name of this group came from Nikki's year of birth. The band members also had Sixx's former father-in-law, Dave Darling, session drummer Bucket Baker, and Steve (Son of Barry) Gibb.

Those of you looking for something Motley Crue like, or even Sixx A.M.- like for that matter, you wont know what to think about 58.

One quick look at the song titles and it isn't too hard to figure out who wrote the majority of the material on this record. Sixx and Darling penned most of the material on Diet For A New America.

Quite honestly, this is more of the type of release I would expect from Tommy Lee, than Nikki Sixx. This music is a radical departure from the hard rock tunes that I am used to hearing Nikki Sixx play on.

I am not a fan of this style of music, but I hear little bits and pieces of Nine Inch Nails type of industrial rock fused with an odd mixture of alternative, and pop music.

This CD is an interesting listening experience, but would likely serve fans of alternative music more so than the hard rocking fans of Motley Crue.

You can pick copies of this disc up from Amazon.com for very little money. Die hard Sixx fans may want to check this out. All others will probably want to avoid this disc.

With the release of their first full-length album in a decade, Saints of Los Angeles, the original line-up of Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, Vince Neil, and Tommy Lee aren't reinventing the wheel as much as reviving a genre. Love 'em or hate 'em, Motley Crue is securely seated at the top of the 80's hair-rock heap. Their latest music is reminiscent of the raunch that defined the era of big hair, big riffs, and big decadence. As this genre continues its revival, Motley Crue are again leading the way with their brand of anti-establishment rock and roll that's now being consumed by a new generation of fans whose parents grew up on this band. In an era of pre-fab pop and bouncing beats, Motley Crue's Saints of Los Angeles is a welcome throw-back for those who appreciate artists that write their own songs and play their own instruments. Rock and roll is about fun and freedom. It represents rebellion and individuality. It's supposed to make you feel good and provide a release. And despite getting on in years, the Crue and their music, continue to do just that. BUY it here.

Here’s a list I haven’t done yet. I’m staying away from doing any guitarist lists

Here's a list I haven't done yet. I'm staying away from doing any guitarist lists for now...I'm not quite ready to jump into that can of worms. These next few musicians are all just cool, and some of them can actually play pretty well too. Remember I keep my lists in current music, so no classic rock guys, but I'm just going to start out by saying that Cliff Burton is my favorite and was the best bass player ever...EVER.

Ok, now for the list :)

10. Paz Lenchantin (A Perfect Circle, Zwan) - I'm listing her as a tribute to all chick bass players. I think its cool when a chick gets on stage with the guys and straps on a bass. Paz does a great job of carrying a heavy rhythm and staying in the pocket. I love the part in the Judith music video when she pulls her hair back during the bridge, then goes right back into playing. [favorite work - Judith]

9. Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue, Sixx AM) - Usually in bands, the guitarist and/or singer is the main songwriter for their band - not the case with Sixx. This guy is the creative force behind Motley Crue. Hey, he obviously wrote some pretty popular music for the 80's. And, I really liked his Sixx AM project he just worked on. I haven't heard the new "Saints of Los Angeles" CD yet, so I can't judge that work. [favorite work - Life is Beautiful]

8. Mark Hoppus (Blink 182, Plus 44) - If you know anything about playing bass, then you probably could play any of Mark's bass lines with one finger and some speedy up and down strokes of a pick. Doesn't make him any less cool though. The music he helped make in Blink 182 is some of the catchiest stuff ever. And the new Plus 44 project with Travis Barker is on a different level, but still fun music. Oh, and he's got my favorite house I've seen on MTV Cribs. [favorite work - Adam's Song]

7. Bruce "Grater" Butler (Motograter) - C'mon, he doesn't just play bass...he invented a new instrument to play instead of bass. It's designed with industrial cable and guitar pieces. [favorite work - Red]

6. Duff McKagen (Guns-n-Roses, Velvet Revolver) - Back in the late 80's and early 90's, Duff and Slash glorified drunkeness to the max. A really resiliant MF'er if you think about it, he put up with Axl the longest too, being th last original GnR member to walk out. Duff's always had a cool stage presence while being laid back at the same time. [favorite work - Rocket Queen]

5. Chi Cheng (Deftones) - I like this guy because he's not only a musician, but he also has a college degree to fall back on if the rockstar thing doesn't work out...haha. He also makes being a vegetarian cool. I mean, I'm all about eating large amounts of animals, but "when you're ripe, you'll bleed out of control", that's just a cool lyric. [favorite work - Elite]

4. Chris Wolstenholme (Muse) - Somebody British has to make this list. I connect with Chris, in that I used to play drums a lot, then picked up a bass for the first time when some friends in a band needed a bass player. Only Chris got a lot better than me (I guess I should've taken lessens). He has some of the coolest basslines in "New Prog." rock. [favorite work - Hysteria]

3. Jason Newstead (Metallica, Ozzy, Echobrain) - He's underrated because he'll always be compared to Cliff Burton, and you will find few that will choose him over Cliff. But really in his own right, he's a pretty damn good bassist. "I Disappear" is really a great song in that it basically tells of Jason's role in Metallica and his departure. [favorite work - The Outlaw Torn]

2. Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) - Everyone puts this guy on their list for bass players. I almost feel cliche' putting him up myself, but how could I not? Flea is a modern legend. He's pretty much the master of subtle intricate bass parts. [favorite work - Around the World]

1. Ryan Martinie (Mudvayne) - I wish I could play bass like this guy. He plays some of the most intricate bass lines in all of metal. Watching him is just sick. I'd name a bunch of techniques and styles of playing that he uses, but you might not know what I'd be talking about, and I hardly have a clue myself. Basically, he's good and he plays stuff, all crazy like. [favorite work - Nothing to Gein]

It's been just over 10 years since the original lineup of Motley Crue released a new album of original material. Has it really been that long since GENERATION SWINE (1997) and the reunion? It seems like the Crue has been very busy in the last decade or so: tours, live CDs & DVDs, a tell-all book (The Dirt) by the band themselves, box sets, greatest hits albums, solo careers and the band even managed to release an album of new material, NEW TATTOO (2000) with the late Randy Castillo on drums instead of Tommy Lee. Get all that? It's hard to believe that SAINTS OF LOS ANGELES didn't come sooner, the question is.....was it worth the wait?

I've been a Motley Crue fan since around '82 when I discovered TOO FAST FOR LOVE at a local record store. I have been excited for every new record, every tour, and every move the band has made for the last 26 years. Hell, I even hated the Crue back in '83 & '84 when everyone was jumping on the bandwagon because they were the hot new thing.....secretly, and unknown to my friends, I was listening to TOO FAST FOR LOVE and SHOUT AT THE DEVIL at high volume in my bedroom, LOL! These guys were the baddest band in the land when I was growing up and every Hard Rock band was chasing them in terms of success and excess. So I was definitely psyched to hear new music coming from the Motley camp but I wasn't sure about the concept: an album loosely based on their collective autobiography The Dirt. The book came out in 2001 and that seems like a long time to release an album based on it. Granted there were personal issues between the original band members but these guys have been back together since the Fall of 2004.

Like most Motley Crue albums after SHOUT AT THE DEVIL (1983), SAINTS OF LOS ANGELES has some really good songs and some filler but the good definitely outweighs the bad. 'L.A.M.F.' starts the album off and it's a spoken word intro by Vince Neil akin to 'In The Beginning' from SHOUT. I'm not sure if this intro is really needed and I find it rather annoying so I hit the skip button. 'Face Down In The Dirt' is pretty cool and has that trashy vibe to start things off on a high note while 'What's It Gonna Take' slows down slightly and hits a nice groove. My favorite song is 'Down At The Whiskey', it has that sound that screams vintage melodic Motley and it has an infectious chorus. What I hear most in this song is Tommy Lee's inspired drumming (listen to those cymbals crash!) and Mick Mars' guitar playing, I think that Mick turns in the best performance of all the members on the whole album. More inspired playing from Mr. Mars on the lead single 'Saints Of Los Angeles'.....sounds a little like 'Wild Side' & 'Dr. Feelgood' doesn't it? Comparisons aside, this is probably the best track on the album despite my favorite being 'Down At The Whiskey'. Motley Crue has always put their best songs forward as singles and videos and 'Saints' is no exception.....it has that big sounding chorus thanks to the guest singers (and labelmates/touring partners) and Mick turns in one hell of a performance. I watched the press conference live on TV and when they played 'Saints' live, Mick went from basically a cripple to fluid motion almost instantly. Great song, I bet it comes off well in concert.

'Muther Fucker Of The Year' starts off the filler. It's an annoying song with juvenile lyrics, it just seems so unnecessary to have the profanity but this is the Crue so they do it. The first ballad is 'The Animal In Me' and is has that whiney Vince vocal that just sounds depressed. It kind of reminds me of 'If I Die Tomorrow' from the hits package RED, WHITE, & CRUE (2005), it has that sad vibe but it's good. One glance at the tracklisting and I was afraid that the band added a Pink Floyd cover to the record with 'Welcome To The Machine' but it's thankfully a gritty, punky original that rocks up like some of the songs did on TOO FAST FOR LOVE. The guitar solo on this song is particularly good and it just makes me respect Mick Mars that much more. Another cool tune is 'Just Another Psycho' that has the catchy hook to get me singing along with Vince and there's a cool bass line from Nikki Sixx that just follows along with the drums to provide the groove. I could do without 'Chicks = Trouble', another filler tune for me. Think they're talking from Tommy Lee's perspective on this one? Or Vince's? Or Nikki's?

A little drum intro starts 'This Ain't A Love Song' and it sounds similar to 'Primal Scream' (from DECADE OF DECADENCE) at times, it's an OK song. 'White Trash Circus' has some decent drum beats but the song bores me with it's chanty singing and dumb lyrics, just awful! 'Goin' Out Swingin' was added to the album late in the game, I think right after the press conference, to add a little punch (forgive the pun) to end the album. The song is uptempo and has some decent guitar lines but it's repetitve with the title in the lyrics.....I have to give it a "thumbs up" though after the last three duds.

Just a few words here about the package, concept, production and performance..... I like the black and white concept the band is using, it's basic and gives the band that street look. I'm not cracking on the guy's medical condition but Mick Mars just looks like one scary bastard! All the promo shots I've seen depict Mick as this mysterious, leather-clad, grim reaper type.....very cool. The songwriting tells the sleazy story of the sex, the drugs, the triumph and tragedy of being in one of the most notorious bands in Rock. I can remember different chapters of Motley history on each song.....Nikki is normally the main songwriter and he had a long history to draw inspiration from, I'll bet everyone contributed much like they did on the book. Production is 2008 modern but you can hear some old school Crue in some of the songs but also some Sixx AM in there too. Obviously, the production assistance Nikki and the band had from James Michael & DJ Ashba (Nikki's Sixx AM bandmates) had some influence on the sound, it's sounds great though and is crystal clear. Performance of the album goes to Mick Mars for his inspired guitar playing despite the Ankylosing spondylitis that is ravaging his body. Second place goes to Vince Neil who sounds pretty good on the mic.

Bottom Line:
I've been playing this non-stop since I bought the album and I think it's a pretty solid record. Like I said before, all Crue albums after the first two have filler but the good songs outweigh the bad. It may not be the next SHOUT AT THE DEVIL or DR. FEELGOOD but I would say that the band has come back with a good album with some great songs and a lot of attitude. Let's just hope that the Crue won't wait another 10 years to release a follow-up!

Favorite Songs: 'Down At The Whiskey', 'Saints Of Los Angeles', 'The Animal In Me', 'Welcome To The Machine'

You know what? I gush all the time about how intelligent Nikki Sixx is and how hes the ultimate rock

You know what? I gush all the time about how intelligent Nikki Sixx is and how hes the ultimate rocker and how no one else comes even close to his level of awesomeness...and 99.99 percent of the time I believe all that to be true. But right now, let me be honest and cut the bullshit, Nikki Sixx can be a real jerk. As much as I like him, I'm not to blinded to see when he's being a fool.

For whatever reason, right now I'm suddenly disliking him more than my usual dislike tends to go. There are several reasons for this:

1) I didn't get to go to Cruefest. and I'm still mad about it.

2) I still don't like that he is dating Kat, I think its all a media ploy and I'm tired of hearing about it. I don't doubt they like each other a whole lot, but all his sappy blog articles and pictures on his myspace are just getting ridiculous and irritating. Why is a grown man acting like a puppy dog? Again, I'm sure they have a great relationship and they love each other, but whatever. I don't need to hear about it every minute of the day. I feel as if they're playing off each other to draw attention to themselves-almost like a strange, strategic career move.

3) speaking of Myspace, there is a photo he posted on there of himself flicking off a church sign. I mean, who does that? I don't care if you're not a Christian and you don't believe in Jesus and all that, but have some respect for those who do. I'm a Christian AND a Crue fan, and I'm a little hurt that a person I look up to so much would be so thoughtless and nasty toward something really important to me. I know its kind of ridiculous for me to be upset about this, and he shouldn't be expected to live according to my expectations, but I still thought it was in bad form to give his middle finger to a church.

4) I think he treats Donna's son terribly, and thats pretty unforgivable. it always makes me angry now when I hear him say in interviews he has only four kids, when just a year or two ago he would have told you he had five kids. Since the divorce, he prettymuch abandoned that poor boy. I mean, he raised him since he was just a little fellow, he has been his father most of the child's life, and now that Donna is out of Nikki's life, he just dismisses the boy, too. You'd think that someone who has all those abandonment issues he keeps talking about would be a little more careful not to cause another kid the same problems.

5) I'm aware of quite a lot of other rumors regarding Nikki, such as those that claim he "hides money" (or has hidden money in the past) to avoid paying out his fair share. I don't know how true these rumors are, I will probably never know how true these rumors are, I DON'T CARE how true they are. I tend to brush them aside and disregard them, because that is exactly how rumors should be treated. At the same time, though, just thinking about them leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Also, knowing what I do know to be a fact regarding other such rumors, I have a hard time of always giving Nikki the benefit of the doubt. I won't say anything more on that note.

Alright, enough Nikki-bashing for now. Maybe tomorrow I'll turn the other cheek and write a post about how much I like him. Anyhow, I do feel better to get those few complaints out of my system.

Rock On y'all!!

Cruefest is in Charlotte, NC today-the closest they'll ever get to where I live. In fact, they're probably performing right now, as I write this. Where am I? NOT at Cruefest. Today sucks.

I could cry. I could whine, wallow in tears, get angry...But instead, I am going to make a list of memorable Motley moments (actually, its turning into more of a list of Nikki Quotes) and share them with you. Annnd here they are!

**********************************************************************************

Jimmy Kimmel (to the Crue): The fire marshal must love you guys.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Narrator (speaking about Motley Crue): The fact that they're all still alive, to me, is testimony to the incredible achievements we've made in modern science. In fact, two of them are probably dead, and they're just sticking them full of adrenaline and electric shocks just to keep them walking around on their stilettos.
You can watch the video of this interview here
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nikki: Hey man, someone's gotta snort it, someone's gotta drink it, someone's gotta go to bed with all these girls-It's a hard life, but as long as I get paid for it, imean, I'll do it...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nikki: "It's not the brick ya got in your  hand.... its the faith ya got in your head that knocks down the wall."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Vince: We have a Dr. Phil...Thats Nikki.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NikkiSixx: "Decadence doesn't just come with a half a bottle of whisky and a dirty needle - it's everywhere if you want to embrace it."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nikki: "I quit drugs, smoking and drinking, so I'm basically a f---ing monk now. I don't even like my coffee that hot."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interviewer: When you do check out, what do you want to be remembered for?
Joko jokakesäinen "luen loman aikana suuria klassikoita" -suunnitelma alkaa rakoilla? Kaipaatko romanttisen hömpän tilalle rujompaa menoa? Naurattavatko Juoppohullun päiväkirjat jo vähän liikaakin?
Iskevätkö sinuun vaarallisesta ja rankan glamoröösistä, huumehöyryisestä, irtosuhteiden täyttämästä rock-elämästä kertovat eepokset, joissa sattuu ja tapahtuu vähintään kyseenalaisen paljon kaikenlaista epäpyhää ja kaikkea sitä, mitä et omalle kohdallesi toivoisi, mutta mistä olet kuitenkin jollain - osittain kierollakin - tavalla utelias lukemaan aina vaan lisää ja lisää? Siinä tapauksessa saatat olla kiinnostunut seuraavista teoksista:
Rankimmat bändisaagat
Mötley Crüe & Strauss, Neil: The Dirt - Törkytehdas
Kaikkien rock-kirjojen isä, äiti, isoveli, pikkusisko, lemmikkigerbiili, loma-asunnon naapuri, biologianopettaja, nimi hautakivessä, presidentti, toimitusjohtaja, marsalkka, luotto-olkapää ja näyttelyhevonen. Tästä kaikki lähti, tähän kaikki päättynee.
McIver, Joel: Metallica - Thrashtitaanien tie maailman mahtavimmaksi metallibändiksi... ja mitä sitten tapahtui
Fanipojan avoin tilitys, joka toimii ja vetää mukanaan. Ihailtavaa omistautuneisuutta asialle sekä mukava pieni "piikki lihassa" -ote esimerkiksi siihen kuuluisaan Napster-oikeudenkäyntiin.
Leaf, David: Kiss - Maskin takaa, virallinen historiikki
Gene Simmons vs. Paul Stanley, ja ehkä muutakin.
Wall, Mick: Iron Maiden
On vain yksi ja ainoa Iron Maiden, tässä lisää siitä.
McIver, Joel: Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath
On vain yksi ja ainoa Black Sabbath, tässä lisää siitä.
Everett, True: Nirvana - tositarina
1990-luvun alun Seattle on tullut tutuimmaksi lähinnä grungen merkeissä. Tämä ehtymättömän fanipojan (tai nolon hännystelijän, päättäkää itse) teos Nirvanasta ruokkinee suurehkoakin dekadenssinnälkää.
Vahvat persoonat (ei minkäänlaisessa paremmuusjärjestyksessä)
Simpson, Mark: Pyhä Morrissey (Sammakko 2006)
Brittiläisen (80- ja 90-luvuilla suositun) The Smiths -bändin laulajan elämäkerta
Jovanovic, Rob: Kate Bush -elämäkerta (Like 2006)
Omintakeisen brittilaulajattaren mystinen elämä.
Crawford, Sue: Ozzy (Johnny Kniga 2003)
Vähän turhan mässäilevä ja mehusteleva teos Ozzy Osbournesta, mutta toiminee sosiaalipornon ystäville.
Osbourne, Sharon & Dening, Penelope: Täysillä - omaelämäkerta (Ajatus Kirjat 2006)
Metallimusiikin virallinen rokkivaimo, lähes kaiken nähnyt Sharon Osbourne riisuu itsensä alasti ja paljastaa syvimmätkin tuntonsa elämästään paitsi Ozzy Osbournen rinnalla, myös isänsä varjossa. Kirjan rehellinen ote tuskin jättää kylmäksi.
Johnstone, Nick: Patti Smith - Rock'n'roll nigger (Johnny Kniga 2007)
Veteraanijenkkipunkkarittaren elämäkerta.
Jameson, Jenna & Strauss, Neil: Erotiikan ammattilainen - seksitähden päiväkirja (Readme.fi 2006)
Jenna on VÄHÄN pihalla... Tämä kirja saa olon melko surulliseksi.
Manson, Marilyn & Strauss, Neil: Helvettiin ja takaisin (Like 2003)
Hollywood-satanistin lapsuudentraumakattaus ja backstagesekoilua poikineen.
Sixx, Nikki & Gittins, Ian: Heroiinipäiväkirja (Like 2008)
Jos Törkytehdas ei täyttänyt tarpeitasi, kannattaa tarttua Mötley Crüen perustajan, biisintekijän ja basistin omiin huumekatkuisiin muistelmiin.
Cobain, Kurt: Päiväkirjat (WSOY 2003)
Autenttiset päiväkirjamerkinnät paljastavat Nirvana-keulahahmon ja sittemmin koko 1990-luvun nuorison itsetuhoisuuden ikoniksi nousseen Kurt Cobainin asennoitumisen elämään sekä sen tyhjyyteen ja turhuuteen. Kirja pysäyttää hetkeksi miettimään, oliko heroiini loppujen lopuksi syy vai seuraus moniin tapahtumiin herran elämässä.
Uudemmat bändikirjat, joiden tenhosta ei oikein osaa sanoa juuta eikä jaata
Myers, Ben: System of a Down - Hollywoodin hypnootikot (Like 2007)
Isoksi kasvaneen omaperäisen rockbändin tarina.
Myers, Ben: Green Day - Amerikan idiootit & uuspunkin kukoistus (Sammakko 2006)
Pop-punk-bändin vaiheet kuorrutettuna yleisellä "uuspunk"-käsittelyllä.
Yleisiä musiikki- ja populaarikulttuuri-ilmiöitä
Baddeley, Gavin: Goth Chic - johdatus pimeän puolen estetiikkaan (Like 2005)
Baddeley valottaa hyvin paljon nimenpudottelua hyödyntäen tätä synkkyydestä viehättynyttä alakulttuuria musiikkeineen, elokuvineen ja klubeineen. Suomesta mukana HIM, josta tosin annetaan vähän erikoinen kuva...
Levine, Noah: Dharma Punx (Like 2006)
Ongelmanuoret muistelevat elämäänsä punk-ympyröissä. Osa ilmeisesti kääntyi sittemmin buddhalaisuuteen ynnä muuta ehkä vähemmän yllättävää.
McNeil, Legs & McCain, Gillian: Please kill me - punkin sensuroimaton esihistoria (Like 2004)
Järkälemäinen kirja valottaa nimensä mukaisesti punk-kulttuurin historiaa, kehittymistä ja tiettyä tuhoakin. Paljon haastatteluita henkilöiltä, jotka olivat ns. asioiden ytimessä punkin esihistoriallisella kaudella.
Robb, John: PUNK! Brittipunkin haastatteluhistoria (Like 2007)
Lisää punk-asiaa, entistä enemmän haastatteluja.
McNeil, Legs & Osborne, Jennifer: Alaston Hollywood - Hollywoodin pimeä puoli, pornoelokuvateollisuuden historia (Like 2006)
Onhan tämäkin eräänlaista rockia... Ainakin ihmiskohtalot ovat yhtä surkuhupaisia kuin tietyillä rokkikukoilla kaikessa rajuudessaan.
Lachman, Gary Valentine: Tajunnan alkemistit - Kuusikymmenluvun mystiikka ja Vesimiehen ajan pimeä puoli (Like 2003)
1960-luvulla vedettiin selkeästi lsd:tä yli 400 sivun verran. Mukana all star -kasti kyseisen ajan "maailmanparantajia", aina Mansonin perheestä Aleister Crowleyhin asti.
Mudrian, Albert & Peel, John: Choosing Death - Deathmetallin ja grindcoren hämmentävä historia (Like 2006)
Äärimetallin tapahtumia ja historiaa.
Listan järkälemäisyydestä johtuen laitoin mukaan vain suomennusvuodet, en siis alkuperäisteosten julkaisuaikoja. Jäikö jokin mielestäsi oleellinen teos uupumaan listaltani? Kommentoi asiaa!
Törkyisän täyteläisiä ja hyvillä riffeillä kuorrutettuja heinäkuun hetkiä kaikille!
This right there is the reason I love Nikki Sixx. I don't know why this video is so appealing. It is though, and for that reason I watch it every day (much to my own embarrassment). Anyway, It really sums up '80's Crue pretty well, I think...
Produced by: Michael Wagener
This is the one that started it all. Though Motley would later sometime adopt a slick, polished (and calculated) sleazy sound later on, this is one is real, raw and powerful. "Live Wire" is one of the greatest album openers of all time and it's hard to handpick "highlights" because the whole album is an absolute classic. I have the 1999 re-issue and even *those* unreleased songs are great, they should've been included on the album the first 'round.
The whole album is just covered in dirt and sleaze and helped to kickstart a genre that Nikki Sixx hates. =) Whether they like it or not, Motley Crue are some of the founding fathers of hair & sleaze metal.
Highlights: Um... every song.
L.A bad boys Motley Crue have finally got round to releasing a new album after 8 years. Even the
L.A bad boys Motley Crue have finally got round to releasing a new album after 8 years. Even the previous album (2000's 'New Tattoo') didn't feature the original line up (drummer Tommy Lee was absent from recordings). 'Generation Swine' (1997) was written in part by Corabi during his stint as vocalist / second guitarist, he also contributed to the self titled 'Motley Crue' therefore discounting these as full Motley Crue contributions, making 'Saints of Los Angeles' the first album since 1989's 'Dr Feelgood' to feature all four members. It was described by band members prior to release as a kind of soundtrack to the band's autobiography entitled 'The Dirt'. So you could say they have a fair amount to live up to with the release of the album in June 2008.
The first single to be released was the title track and features tales of debauchery, pretty much setting the scene for the entire record's focus. All things considered its clear to see that they couldn't have chosen a better song to sell the upcoming album because quite simply, it packs a mean punch. The chunky guitar riffs and the shout along chorus makes for a classic sounding Crue song that you can easily envisage being blasted at stadiums around the world on the forthcoming 'Cruefest'.
      The album contains 13 tracks (an omen?) which include the prelude to the album entitled 'L.A.M.F' which closely resembles the openers on what may be viewed as 'classic' Crue albums like 'Shout at the Devil' with the aptly titled intro song 'In the Beginning' and 'Dr Feelgood' with the eerie opener 'T.N.T'. Track 1 totally prepares you for the lyrical content of the album, a dark and twisted tale of four self proclaimed 'saints'.
      "It's a dirty job but someones gotta do it!" sums up the Crue's attitude perfectly as they launch into a rip-roaringtrack that satisfies any of those hopes and aspirations you may have had for the album. It's fast paced, Neil's vocals fit neatly over the top of the predominant guitars with the tight combination of Sixx and Lee bringing up the rear.
      "What's it gunna take" is softer but has more of a definate groove to it, offering a contrast to the previous track and showing that Motley Crue isn't just a one trick pony. This song tells of the struggle of making it big in a culturally saturated part of America where the Crue were shunned at the beginning of their careers but have ultimately come out on top despite being proclaimed "Too Loud" by all the radio stations!
      As the familiar feedback kicks in for the start of 'Down at the Whisky' you know this is going to be a punchy anthem. You would be right, particularly shining on this track is Tommy Lee who's drums come pounding through the pick slides, subtle guitar solo (not to be overlooked) and signature sweet voice of Neil. The Motley boys definitely 'make a scene' with this song and it will stay in your head allday if you aren't careful!
      Ever thought you'd hear the Lord's Prayer on a Motley album? Well you have now! The satanic twist still lives on in the Crue as the common representation of innocenceis mutated as the intro to the stand out track 'Saints of Los Angeles'. This song has verses as catchy as 'Sick Love Song' and a chorus that packs one hell of a punch that could leave you gasping for breath if you even dared to underestimate this album. The riffs and licks present on this song just totally go back to the mid 80's Crue that we all knew and loved, with all industrial and alt rock sounds sent to the S.I.N bin! Mars dive bombs through a solo with his trademark high pitched pinches and leaves you just wanting more...
      The more you were waiting for comes in the next song. One word to describe this track would definitely be crunching. It drives home that classic Motley riff while Neil soars over the top with the chorus, almost sickly sweet yet again but isn't this what we've all been waiting for?! 'M*****F****** of the Year' definitely doesn't hold back and totally immerses the listener. The layering from Mars on guitar and Neil on vocals totally enhances the song, giving it a deep and hugely powerful sound that they perfected in the production of 'Dr Feelgood' all the way back in 1989. The solo is a particular standout moment and complements the song entirely rather than seeming as though it is simply there because you HAVE to have a guitar solo.
      'The Animal in Me' certainly is a more sensitive and inward looking song that perhaps is the most noticeable for external influence in the songwriting department. Sixx had help this time for SOLA not just from his Motley partners but also from Sixx:AM bandmates; DJ Ashba, James Michael and also Marti Frederiksen who wrote a large amount of post 1990 Aerosmith songs and also produced some of their albums. Perhaps aimed at radio audiences rather than stadium ones you can't imagine this song making it into a greatest hits album any time soon.
     Anybody up for a bit of industry slating and a slice of Sixx venting his seemingly never ending anger at record companies? Though so. 'Welcome to the Machine' may not be one to stand out in your mind on the first listen, but after heard it a couple of time it's entirely worth it's slot on the album. With Neil panting half way in it seems like as described in 'The Dirt'; totally exhausting! Hearing the pent up frustration that they seemed to feel at their record label (Elektra back in the day) it's no wonder that they went on to form their own!
      Nikki Sixx could easily be recognise as the rockstar who pushed the boundries the furthest (with the exception of Lemmy perhaps). Dying twice seems to have it's benefits though, as the tormented and dillusional life he led around his deaths to have provided him with endless song writing ammunition! Having completed an album already on the subject of his worst experiences with smack in 1987 it's surprising that he could russle up another. But no, he's done it! The song is catchy enough and provides some thrills but yet again doesn't quite meet the expectations drawns from the what can be seen as the centre piece of the album (the deadly combination of 'Saints' and 'M*****F***** of the year')
      For those of you who have read Sixx's'Heroin Diaries' you will see which andle the next track comes from. For those of you who haven't (why not!?) it refers to a slogan Sixx often adopted in his writing. After encounters with women who more often than not caused only hell for the addled rocker he would frequently write in his diaries in big bold letters "Chixx= Trouble". The song itself is one of the stand out moments on the record, it has the required shout along chorus that screams Motley Crue! Certainly one for the Ipod!
       Listen to the drums on the following intro as they first kick in and you will think to yourself "Surely not!" as it really does sound like they'll kick into a (Shout at the Devil '97' esque) update of 'Too Young to Fall in Love'. But it's OK as they know that they couldn'timprove it, so instead they play 'This Ain't a Love Song'. Comedy? Motley Crue? Well 'This Ain't a Love Song' has a huge portion of tongue in cheek lyrics to accompany the hammering drums. Neilgoes on to state that although this 'Ain't a love song, it's just a f*** song!"making it blatantly obvious what the intentions of the young and lustful musicians were during their height of fame.
      As we all know by now, the Crue like to remind us just what a bunch of misfits they are! This song does just that, they take pride in their attire and attitude and simply 'don't give a damn'. The tales of sex booze and drugs displayed in the bands autobiography is reflected in its truest and most sleazy form by this song. The swing and swagger that is conveyed by the twisted circus riff is really catchy and would have been totally at home being play on the Carnival of Sins tour, with the psycho clowns and PVC clad lesbian acrobats!
      Going out with a bang is important, and Motley Crue sure know how to go out with one! The more up tempo song 'Going Out Swinging' gets the blood racing and is remeniscant of classic speed offenders like 'Kickstart My Heart'. The crunching and punching riff drives home the message that these guys are a gang, nobody is going to mess with them and put simply by the band themselves "come on, bring it!"
      As a whole the album is a complete success, it provides everything expected for a new Motley Crue album and some! As a loose idea of a concept album the lyrics seem to work, though on some songs a whiff of cheddar can be identified. The songwriting is good in general, excellent on songs like 'Saints of Los Angeles', 'M*****F***** of the Year' and 'Going out Swinging' but there are weaker numbers that really lack the attitude and energy that you get from the high flyers on the album. The trakcs that maybe drag the album down and add no real power to it would stand out as 'Animal in Me' and 'Welcome to the Machine'. Having been somewhat dissapointed with the music produced by Sixx:AM for the soundtrack to the 'Heroin Diaries' it was hard not to think to myself that having Michaels working on the songwriting wouldn't be a good thing (Ashba proved himself in Beautiful Creatures and BulletBoys). The overall effect doesn't seem that bad, but you can clearly see that there is a stylistic change in the two songs mentioned above that detract from the overall feel (not so much in  'Just Another Psycho' though it is clear that this was another Michael influence). The production is good, keeping with the larger than life sound that defines Motley Crue but making more use of layering. Consequently despite my negative preconseptions about having James Michael produce he has done a brilliant job for a band who could have been tricky customers (Sixx knows what he wants, and he's gunna get it!). What more could a Cruehead ask for? This album provides enough songs of debauchery and drug addiction to leave you feeling somewhat drained (or maybe that was just the partying along) it also leaves you craving, craving not only for the next studio album, but also for this summers Cruefest.
