Symantec Protection 11.0 dan Symantec Network Access Control 11.00 telah memperoleh sertifikasi Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 2 augmented with ALC_FLR.2 and AVA_MSU.1 (EAL2+).

Government Protection Profile for Anti-Virus Applications for Workstations in Basic Robustness Environments, Version 1.1 yang ditetapkan pada 4 April 2006.

Which of the following statements is TRUE? (Choose all that apply)

A. A drive letter is assigned to the extended partition.
B. The MBR contains the partition information about the beginning and end of the
primary and extended partitions.
C. With FDISK, you can create partitions, 646-653 delete partitions, mark a partition as active, or
display available partitioning information.
D. None of the above.
Answer: B, C
Explanation:
FDISK creates a start and an end to a section of hard drive space. At the beginning of that
space, it creates a special file called the Master Boot Record, or MBR. The MBR
contains the partition information 646-562 about the beginning and end of the primary and
extended partitions. At the beginning of the partitions, this record is called the DOS
Volume Boot Sector.

Incorrect Answers
A: No drive letter is assigned to the extended partition.

In which physical network topology would a Multistation Access Unit (MSAU) be
used? (Choose all that apply)

A. The star topology.
B. The ring topology.
C. The bus topology.
D. The full-mesh topology.
Answer: B
Explanation:
The ring topology consists of a 642-055 closed loop in which each host is connected to the node
ahead of it and the node behind it in the loop. A Multistation Access Unit (MSAU) can
be used to interconnect multiple ring networks.

Incorrect Answers:
B: In the star topology each 642-061 computer is connected to a central hub or switch by one
cable or wireless connection. It does not use a Multistation Access Unit (MSAU).
C: The bus topology is similar to the ring topology, except that the cable does not form a
complete loop, but is terminated at each end. It does not use a Multistation Access Unit
(MSAU).
D: In the full-mesh topology, 642-066 each host is connected to at least two other hosts. This does
not require a Multistation Access Unit (MSAU).

Answer: C
Explanation:
The WIN.INI file sets 70-290 particular values corresponding to the Windows environment

Incorrect Answers:
A: The EMM386.EXE is used to provide the operating system with a mechanism to see

This post is by guest blogger Rowan Trollope. Rowan is Senior Vice President of Consumer Products at Symantec. Rowan joined Symantec in 1991, and currently oversees product development, engineering, business strategy, and industry relations for Symantec’s worldwide consumer products. In this role, Trollope manages a team of engineers, product managers, and research and development staff that identifies and develops the Norton line of consumer products, including Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus and Norton 360. You can find out more about Rowan here.

As E-bay is to auctions, E-Lottery would be to lotteries.

The other day I was driving home and thinking about how I could justify purchasing a ticket on the inaugural Virgin Galactic flight to space (http://www.virgingalactic.com). The (projected) $200k price-tag makes it a bit more than I want to bite off for 5 minutes in space and I am willing to wait until the prices come down. So this got me thinking about how much I'd be willing to spend, even just for a *chance* to go to space.

This led me to an idea I've dubbed "ELottery". ELottery is an idea for a web-site where users can create a lottery listing for virtually anything. Other users can then purchase tickets to win the item being listed. This could be a ticket to space, a date with a celebrity (proceeds go to charity), or a Ferrari F430 Spyder.

The site might work as follows:

A site user creates a new lottery for an item, let's use "Ticket to space" as the example. This item will have a cost of $200,000. The user sets the ticket price at $1 and the lottery gets listed on the listing page. Other users who are interested in a chance to win a ticket to space can now purchase one or more tickets for the lottery. When a ticket is purchased by a user, their credit card is charged, in this case, $1. Once enough people have purchased tickets to pay for the item (or a set time expires), the lottery closes, and the item is purchased.

There is a case where the total number of lottery tickets cannot be sold, and in this case, each persons money would have to be refunded. An alternative scheme would be that a "hold" is placed on the credit card until such time as enough users have signed up, at which point all users who had purchased tickets would be charged simultaneously, thus eliminating the need to refund. Another alternative would be to charge the card immediately, and refund the money to the user into their "lottery" account on the site. This would prevent unnecessary charges back and forth, and would keep the money in the system.

I would point out here that I have not looked at the gambling aspects of this. This type of site (hosted in the US) might be illegal! Nevertheless, monetization would be through a variety of avenues:

1) Interest earned on holding the $ from the ticket sales between the time of purchase, and the close of the lottery.
2) Charging per-item/listing flat fee (oversell tickets to cover this cost -- the cost is thus distributed between the lottery ticket buyers.
3) Online advertising.

Consider this: You might not be willing to spend $200k on a ticket to space, but would you be willing to spend $2,000 for a 1:100 chance? Would you spend $5,000k for a 1:20 chance of winning an Audi R8?

I think if you keep the prices on individual tickets low enough you would have plenty of takers who would bid on items, despite potentially very low odds of winning. For example, a user might put $50 in their lottery account, and purchase 50 lottery tickets to 50 different items that interested them: expensive TV's, Ferrari's, Motorcycles, etc.

To increase the entertainment value of this site and drive increased daily traffic and interactions, I would add the element of time into the "selection process". For example, let's take the example of the "ticket to space". Once the total required number of tickets have been purchased, the "selection process" or "elimination round" begins. This is the process of elimination where the final winner is selected. This could be drawn out over a period of days, weeks or months. In the case of our ticket to space, imagine that the selection process occurred over a 2 week period, causing people to be drawn back into the site to watch and "cheer themselves on" as long as their ticket is still "in the game". Each time an elimination occurs, users would see their "odds to win" increase!

Another interesting element would be reselling or auctioning off your ticket during the elimination rounds. As your odds of winning increase after each elimination, the value of your ticket would go up, and could be traded on a secondary marketplace on the site.

Another possible option would be the ability to end a lottery prematurely. During the final weeks as the total remaining players decreased to smaller numbers (say 4 players), players could vote at any time to "end" the lottery, which, if agreed unanimously, would result in the cash being distributed 4 ways, instead of waiting and hoping for a 25% chance of the final prize. All of these settings could be determined up front by the lottery creator, or could be voted on by the lottery players in real-time.

As envisioned, this concept would primarily have value as a gaming/entertainment site, however I could imagine the interesting things that people might do with it, and I think it could be a very interesting site if someone took the time to create it.

I came across this interesting article from ZDNet on how MSFT’s Equipt might actually portend

I came across this interesting article from ZDNet on how MSFT's Equipt might actually portend a viable business model for open source:

This could be a great opportunity for open source.

Imagine, if you will, Open Office partnering with one of the security vendors being bypassed through this announcement. Trend Micro, McAfee, Symantec, CheckPoint, even Avast! There are many vendors directly threatened with death anxious to deal.

...

See how easy this bundle is to pull off? With open source tools? You can have a SaaS system spinning big bucks in consumer open source within a few months.

Now imagine what Open Office could do with that money? Even a taste of, say, $50/year would, multiplied millions of times, enable an immense effort in documentation and development, taking it well past Microsoft Office in capabilities.

You can say Microsoft has found a way to crush open source. Or you can say open source has been shown a business model it can use to crack the mass market and gain a sustainable revenue base.

I really don't get it. Why would the AV makes pay a dime to OpenOffice for what is product OO gives away for free?

However, I guess the bigger question here is - by tying office productivity with AV, I guess the question becomes - which do consumers value more?

If I have 2 competing, equally priced bundles, 1 with better office productivity and the other with better AV, which one would win?

My money is on one with better Office productivity. Let's face it, AV is an insurance product. How much do you REALLY value better insurance? If given the choice, Wouldn't prefer to have a more rocking home theatre system instead?

Net net, a quite brilliant move on the part of MSFT. Kudos to the product team for pulling this off.

Novidades do Norton 2009:

Nova tecnologia no Norton 2009

Vírus transmitidos por sites;

Ataques externos;

Spywares.

Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 by Matthew D. Sarrel.

Businesses face myriad Internet threats—rootkits to the left, bots to the right, spyware behind—yet, despite all opposition, they must charge onto an e-commerce and technology battlefield. Fortunately, the new Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 (EP 11), an anti-everything software client, strings virtual barbed wire around your business's PCs. A host-based intrusion prevention system (HIPS) uses TruScan proactive threat scanning to prevent zero-day attacks and at the same time locks down the desktop so that only authorized apps can run. Device control regulates the copying of files to USB memory devices. Antivirus and antispyware features (along with anti-rootkit protection) guard against malware. A network IPS rounds out the product, along with a firewall that provides low-level protection from network threats. Typically, when testing a product as feature-rich as this, we find a few things that don't work, so we're happy to report that Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 actually does work. It blocked malware and controlled removable device privileges as configured and is a fine choice for businesses with perhaps 25 to 50 users.

Administrators can install the software in unmanaged fashion—directly on workstations, in other words—or using a managed approach, by putting the software on a server and then packaging and pushing it to workstations. When I installed it on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (remember to turn on IIS before installation), a wizard walked me through configuration, during which I set the admin password and created a database (which took 15 minutes or so to initialize). The installation wizard launched a deployment wizard, and using that I exported an install package that was only about 60MB. Although I installed this package manually on my test workstation, you can push it to clients using Active Directory. Once the client software was running, the workstation appeared in the management console.

The management interface gives you control down to an extreme level of granularity. That's no mean feat, and, for the most part, the developers did a great job. Still, to let managers segment clients for management purposes, there are four levels of organization (group, location, domain, client), and getting used to that took some time. The approach provides an advantage, though: Different administrators can assign different policies based on departmental policy and then apply a modified version of that policy if the computer moves. For instance, a laptop in the office may have a more restrictive security policy than the same laptop on the road.

This flexibility is important in large enterprises, but for small businesses it's overkill. You should try to segment as little as possible to simplify ongoing policy management. The soundest advice I can give regarding implementation of Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 is to roll it out using the default policies, watch the notifications that you get, and adjust policy as needed over time.

Testing Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0

Configuring security policy on my management server and pushing it to the client workstation was easy enough. But although the management interface is clean and well organized, the many options make getting lost quite possible. I had no trouble configuring malware scans and HIPS and firewall policies, though—it's really just a matter of finding the right check box most of the time.

In my efficacy tests, Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 blocked six of six attempted virus downloads via HTTP, even detecting my test virus within a ZIP file. It blocked six of eight attempted keylogger downloads, allowing me to install the two that got through but later detecting one through a routine scan and removing it. The product blocked all seven attempted Trojan horse downloads and eight of ten spyware downloads, but it did allow me to install the two that got through without removing them. For comparison, consider that the feckless F-Secure Client Security 7.1 fell victim to eight keyloggers, four rogues, and four adware applications. In one case the spyware was never detected; in the other case the antispyware didn't detect the spyware, but the firewall did. I was unhappy, though, that the message the utility displayed was the rather vague "HTTP CommonName Traffic Detected." A chat with Symantec confirmed that this did indeed mean the spyware had been blocked, and you can edit firewall policy from the management console to append a statement like "This traffic has been blocked and your network administrator has been notified" to the message. It might be nice if Symantec did this little piece of work for you, though.

Device control worked very well. I was able to prevent the client computer from writing files to a USB memory key, and I also built and distributed a policy that prevented users from sending data to CD and DVD drives, Bluetooth devices, and printers. In addition, I was able to customize the message that users would see when their access was blocked—a helpful capability that lets them know the restriction is intentional and not a system error.

Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 gives an organization's IT administrator comprehensive tools for detecting and repelling attacks. With a protection product that allows this much flexibility and control over policies, you'll have to spend some time learning the ins and outs, but that's far better than learning that your business has been compromised. The good news is that once you climb the learning curve, the product actually works, unlike competitor F-Secure Client Security 7.1, which was easy to implement yet stopped practically nothing from infecting our test machines. Priced at roughly two to three times what the competition costs, Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 isn't cheap, but in some respects you get what you pay for—and in this case, you're paying for peace of mind.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008

BitDefender was an excellent performer among security suites, but it's best for experts who don't need guidance regarding security extras and pop-up alerts and who don't mind therough interface.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 ($40 for one PC, $50 for three PCs) pairs shining success with disappointing failure. It outperformed every other suite in crucial malware detection tests, unmasked every rootkit sample.

But this stellar performance behind the scenes was seriously marred by an unpleasant user experience. From aggravations with the initial installation to difficulties with warning pop-ups, BitDefender Internet Security 2008flaws are hard to brush off.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 did extremely well when subjected to AV-Test.org's 674,589 inactive malware samples, detecting 98 percent of them. It also did the best job of detecting new, unknown malware in heuristics tests, with a 29 percent catch rate using one-month-old signatures. And it also tied for first with Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 for the fastest response (0 to 2 hours) to malware outbreaks.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 firewall successfully masked a protected PC against outside scans, but it displayed needless warnings when the Firefox Web browser tried to access the Internet. That program should be on any firewall's list of known (and approved) applications.

The suite offers a good array of secondary features, including antiphishing, parental controls, antispam, and data privacy. But these extras need polish. The browser-based antiphishing tool didn't block any sites until I enabled the feature's heuristic detection, which is off by default. When I enabled parental control for other users, I wasn't prompted to set a program password--but if you fail to do so and you set up your kids' accounts with administrator rights, they'll be able to turn off the parental controls.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 warning pop-ups did a poor job of guiding us through the steps of removing a detected e-mail worm (Warezov). The pop-up alert had options for ignoring, quarantining, or deleting the file. But perhaps because ther malware was lurking inside a .zip file, the security suite's default option was to ignore the infection. Choosing to quarantine the archive failed, but rather than alerting me to the failure. the program just popped up the same window without the quarantine option. Choosing delete finally worked.

If BitDefender Internet Security 2008 interface and warnings were anywhere near as good as its virus detection engine, the suite would be easy to recommend. But its confusing pop-ups, program bugs, and high false positive rate make it best suited to a user who has strong technical skills and can at times make the right security choices without guidance from the software.

Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2008 suite offers solid security protection and features, including the best behavior-based defense against unknown threats.

Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2008 security suite ($70 for up to three PCs) is easy to use and comes with a host of extra security features, such as a separate Security Inspector scan that warns about unsafe browser settings and other potential security holes. It was the only suite in our testing for "All-in-One Security Suites: Tried and Tested" that didn't cry wolf by reporting at least one false positive.

It detected an above-average 91 percent of AV-Test.org's 674,589 malware samples. This results put the Norton suite close behind the Avira Premium Security Suite, BitDefender Internet Security 2008 , Checkpoint ZoneAlarm Internet SecuritySuite 7.1, and Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 packages, each of which detected 95 percent or more of the malware samples. Nevertheless. a 4 percent difference in detection rates represents a difference of 26,983 undetected samples. Symantec's suite produced the second-worst showing on AV-Test's heuristic tests, catching only 10 percent of samples when required to use one-month-old signature files to detect unknown malware based on similarities to existing code.

The Symantec suite did outperform the other programs at getting rid of infections. It cleaned up 80 percent of all files and Registry entries added by malware. In particular, Norton was a champ at fighting rootkits--malware designed to hide other malware. It detected every active and inactive rootkit sample, and successfully neutralized those infections. Symantec's suite was one of only two programs (Checkpoint was the other) to detect and block unidentified malware based solely on the way it behaved, but even so it caught just one sample out of five.

In our tests, on-demand (user-initiated) scans were more than 50 percent faster with Norton than with the next-fastest suite (Avira Premium), yielding an impressive data-analysis rate of 16.07 megabytes per second. And those on-demand scans look inside file archives, where crooks frequently hide malicious payloads. (On the other hand, Norton's automatic scans, which check files as your system saves them to the hard drive, won't check file archives unless you change the default settings).

Symantec's firewall is polished. It successfully blocked attempts from outside to scan a protected PC for information, and it did better than most competing suites at refraining from issuing unnecessary warnings about benign apps such as Firefox and Internet Explorer.

In addition, Norton Internet Security 2008 displayed an apt warning when it detected an unencrypted wireless connection, and it incorporates various safe-browsing features. For example, its Norton Confidential toolbar, designed for Firefox and Internet Explorer, blocks phishing sites; and its Browser Defender checks for known vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer 6 and 7. Though the suite's Identity Safe feature protects sensitive data, such as credit card numbers, from inadvertently leaving your PC, you'll must manually tell it what information to protect--a standard but laborious process. It has no antispam or parental controls, but those features are freely downloadable from Symantec's site.

The interface is well laid-out, and the software's pop-up detection alerts are generally understandable, though they provide little information, such as where a threat was found. Its impressive log entries simplify the task of finding out what the program has been up to--but again they lack information about where a given threat was discovered.

Our one major criticism of the suite is that when we uninstalled it, it left behind the separate LiveUpdate component. You have to know to go back and remove LiveUpdate as well.

Norton Internet Security 2008 has a good design and an appealing feature set. It could be better at blocking malware, but it's the best choice of the eight we looked at.

Symantec's web site hasn't been much help thus far, though I'm still going through the listings. And of course, I don't even know why I waste my time looking on Dell's site. I'm sure it's a software issue, but, Dell, please. At least give me a link to an irrelevant page at Symantec to pretend you care. Bloody hell!

Needless to say, I'm pretty fried right now. I'd like to have a beer or two, but I'm doing this Atkins thing, cuz I ate too much fried seafood while I was on vacation. Curses, you taste ocean critters, made even tastier by dredging you in an egg wash and frying you in oil.
