With more and more brands like Acer, Dell and HP entering the market for low-cost small notebooks like the Asus' Eee PC, the market specialists from Topology Research raised forecasts for the worldwide laptop market from 120 to 128 million units. That is around 7 percent more than expected. So Topology Research sees a plus of 37 percent in comparison to 2007 with 93 million sold notebooks. Also the notebook manufacturer from Taiwan, who are controlling far more than 90 percent of the worldwide laptop production, have raised their expectations.

Quanta Computer gains in the first quarter of 2008 a world market share of 31 percent, followed by Compal with 24 percent and Wistron with 16 percent. Together with Inventec and the Asus spin-off Pegatron they made in Q1 2008 about 91 percent of the global laptop production. Asustek (Asus) has sold for the first half of 2008 about 2 million Eee PC. Asustek (Asus) expects for the year 2008 altogether 5 million Eee PCs out of about 10 million low-cost netbooks.

The industry-wide notebook battery shortage will delay UMPCs getting into the hands of buyers, but should be over in Q3 2008.

Sony is tapping into Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn) and Qisda Corporation to manufacture LCD TVs. This is the first time that Foxconn and Qisda will be assembling LCD TVs for Sony. Qisda is the manufacturing arm of BenQ. Foxconn will be building Sony's 32" and 37" LCD TVs while Qisda will be making slightly larger and upscale ones.

According to rumors, Wistron has decided to acquire the DLP rear projection TV (RPTV) business of Delta Electronics. Delta's LCD and plasma display panel (PDP) TV business will also be merged into Wistron. Wistron has received a very large order from Sharp for 350,000 - 500,000 DLP RPTVs per month. Now although this is just a rumor, it's an interesting rumor because currently Sharp is only involved in LCD TV production. If Sharp has decided to enter the DLP TV business, this will be very weird, to say the least. Sharp has already heavily invested in G8 production capability that will enable it to compete very well in the 50"-59" sizes. Of course, with DLP TVs, it would be much cost-effective to compete in the 60" and larger sizes relative to a G9 investment.

HP has tapped Wistron to build its LCD TVs in 2007. Wistron will build 26", 32", 42" and 47" LCD TVs for HP. The 26" and 32" LCD TVs will have Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) panels while the 42" and 47" LCD TVs will be sourced from LG.Philips LCD (LPL). CMO panels will likely be a vertical alignment (VA) based LCD while the 42" and 47" will be based on S-IPS.
